In Memory
January 21, 1955 - July 27, 2020
The second son of nine siblings born to Mr. Willie Mack Reed and Mrs. Roberta Alston, and was blessed to be raised and nurtured by his grandmother. He received his public education through the Tipton County school system, and was among the 1973 graduate class of Covington High School. Elder Reed was encouraged and mentored by his uncle, Mr. Jack Tyus, to be industrious and work hard. As a result, he was an entrepreneur. When other young men were trying to get money, Elder Reed made money. He obtained employment with the ITW Paslode Cooperation and was promoted to group leader and supervisor for 27 years, which was the beginning of his training as a true and just leader. At the age of 19, Pastor Reed discovered that his life was incomplete, so he decided to surrender to the Lord. He became a member of Covington Church of God in Christ. In 1975, while attending a prayer and bible study meeting in the house of Missionary Juanita Rice, he received the baptism of the Holy Ghost. Serving diligently and faithfully, Pastor Reed had the opportunity to proclaim the gospel from the pulpit as a deacon-trustee, on many occasions, in the presence and absence of Bishop Charles Rodgers, who served as pastor. Elder Reed’s servitude to his local assembly included lawn and grounds keeper, minister of visitation, an usher, a deacon, a choir member, a minister, and assistant to the pastor. He was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Margarett Smith in 1975 and remained until her demise July 19, 2002. On November 7,2004, he became the groom of the lovely Gloria LaVonne Jones and remained until the Lord summoned him home to rest.
Pastor Reed was called into the ministry in 1983. He attended the WL Porter Training Institute in Jackson, Tennessee. He received his minister’s license and was ordained August 5, 1988, as an Elder in the Church of God in Christ. He was appointed pastor of Covington Church of God in Christ, December 31, 1996, by Bishop Samuel L. Lowe and received his Certificate of Appointment as pastor February 28, 1997. His vision was “Souls be saved, bodies be healed, and people be delivered”. His visionary travel led him and the congregation to the new location on Highway 51 South, Covington, TN. Despite adversities, God opened a door and made a way for him and the membership to erect a new edifice. The name given to the church exemplifies that promise “Great Expectations”. With the spirit of humbleness, compassion, and love, he pressed toward the mark of his calling as a servant of God. He was known to teach and preach the gospel under the anointing. One significant point that he made known concerning the ministry was he did not police the Word of God, only delivered the Word as the Spirit directed. He lived “what he preached” and “preached what he lived.” Pastor Reed served as a pastor of the Pentecostal Evangelist District/DD Chandler District, under the leadership of Superintendents: T.R. Burnett, Fredrick Smith, Sr, and Danny O Blayde, where he was admired by the pastors and their parishioners. He was also a member of the Tipton County Ministerial Alliance Association. We praise God for the life andd legacy of Pastor E L Reed.
